| The
chartering of the Chicago Alumni Chapter on April 6, 1919 marked the
Fraternity's first designated Alumni Chapter and it was named for the
city in which it was located. Being a great metropolitan area
abounding with opportunities, Chicago attracted alumni members in great
numbers.

Byron K. Armstrong one of the
ten founders and Earl Burris Dickerson, Founder of the Beta Chapter,
were the prime movers of the Chicago Alumni Chapter's
establishment. C. Leon Wilson, Hale C. Parker, William J. Prince,
George C. Ellis and Troy Smith worked closely with Armstrong and
Dickerson. Ezra
D. Alexander, W.W. Gibbs and Frank Summers, of Alpha Chapter fame, were
among the membership. William J. Prince from Beta Chapter was the
first Polemarch of the Chicago Alumni Chapter. His administration
marked the transition away from inexperience and sheer idealism to
organizational maturity.
Chicago, a rattling, restless,
fast moving sophisticated city was characteristic of the changing
times. It was already a Mecca for ambitious, aggressive graduates
of colleges and universities throughout the country, graduates dedicated
to the Fraternity Purpose of Achievement. The Chapter's activities
were influenced accordingly, and the administrative and operating arms
of the national Fraternity were the better for it. Among the
city's alumni were Founders Edward G. Irvin, Ezra D. Alexander, Byron K.
Armstrong and Irven Armstrong.
